Introduction

Kidbrooke Village is a £1bn regeneration scheme across 48 hectares in south east London. Kidbrooke Village is an entire community in the making that will include schools, shops, health facilities, offices, and a new train station and Berkeley East Thames is set to deliver approximately 4000 new homes by 2028 as part of the scheme.
On a project of this magnitude, managing and reporting on sustainability targets and requirements can quickly turn into a nightmare for the administrative team. To get the most out of the project data and minimise the steps required in reporting, the project team opted to try an innovative digital solution.

The challenge

To ensure sustainability standards and targets are met, developers are required to do extensive reporting on waste removals, and material and fuel deliveries. Across much of the industry, the current reporting process requires someone on site to physically gather Waste Transfer Notes and material delivery receipts and take them to the project office for the document controller to input into a spreadsheet. Not only does this add administrative strain to the project team, but the tickets are also at risk of being lost in transit or forgotten after a long day on site.

“I have always been very conscious of how time consuming ensuring compliance with waste regulations and corporate procurement policies can be for our site teams, so I was very excited when I came across Qflow. The app takes most of the burden away, saving the site team’s time and improving data accuracy. Automating the system also means that we can gather more data than ever before on material use, which will help us reduce construction waste.”

– Giorgia Franco, Head of Sustainability, Berkeley East Thames

The solution

Berkeley East Thames identified Qflow as a potential solution to help them deliver these high standards. They piloted the system to demonstrate that it could help improve compliance levels and data capture, and reduce the burden placed on the project team.
In March 2020, Berkeley East Thames deployed Qflow on the Kidbrooke Village Phase 2 West site. The team began using Qflow immediately as it requires minimal training to use at full efficiency. Within weeks the site team began to see results from using Qflow. The day-to-day admin work for sustainability reporting and compliance checks was significantly reduced. This made integrating Qflow with the team easy as the direct benefits to them were easily recognised.
